Our Monarchy
Canada is a constitutional monarchy as well as a
Commonwealth Realm, with Queen Elizabeth II as
our reigning monarch, since February 6, 1952. As
such she is Canada's head of state and
officially called Queen of Canada.
As Head of State, The Queen undertakes
constitutional and representational duties which
have developed over hundreds of years. In
addition to these State duties, The Queen has a
less formal role as 'Head of Nation'. She acts
as a focus for national identity, unity and
pride; gives a sense of stability and
continuity; officially recognises success and
excellence; and supports the ideal of public and
voluntary service.
